Plants for offices, receptions and restaurants in Amman

Offices are hard on plants for three specific reasons, and none of them is the one people assume.

Nobody waters at the weekend. A plant needing water every three days will not survive a Thursday-to-Sunday gap, let alone an Eid closure.

Air conditioning. It strips humidity continuously and blows cold dry air at whatever sits near a vent. This is the leading cause of plant damage in Jordanian offices, and it is almost always misdiagnosed as underwatering.

Light. Deep floorplates put many desks far from a window, and fluorescent light contributes very little a plant can use.

What we recommend

• ZZ plant — stores water in rhizomes; survives a fortnight unattended.
• Snake plant — upright, fits narrow spots, needs water less than almost anything.
• Aglaonema — the only reliable way to get patterned foliage into a dim interior.
• Dracaena marginata — height without floor area, good beside a desk or in a corridor.
• Kentia palm — for reception areas; slower and more tolerant than any other indoor palm, and pet-safe.
